Young Competition Law 2025, EUI (IT)
Mark your calendars for November! After a successful conference last year in Vienna, the Early Career Scholars Conference will be coming to Florence!
This year, we ask participants to study competition law and policy from an innovation perspective. Recent legal, economic, and political developments thrust the issue into the forefront once again, culminating in Mario Draghi's report on European competitiveness. Draghi's recommendations require serious intellectual commitment to innovation, dynamic competition, capabilities, ecosystems, and more. Fresh perspectives and bold initiatives are needed. We believe early career scholars are excellent candidates to kickstart the process.
For a lively discussion, we invite PhD candidates, Postdoctoral Students, Assistant Professors, as well as Advanced Students wishing to pursue a PhD, and Young Professionals (within 5 years after commencing a professional activity) to submit their ideas for potential conference contributions by 20 May 2025.
The Call for Papers can be found in the black box left side.
Lena Hornkohl, Selcukhan Ünekbaş and myself are looking forward to your submissions!

From September 4 to 6, the International Young Competition Law Scholar Conference took place at the University of Vienna. This event was jointly organized by the University of Vienna (Ass.-Prof. Dr. Lena Hornkohl), the University of Innsbruck (Dr. Bernadette Zelger), Johannes Kepler University Linz (Dr. Ranjana Achleitner), and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Eva Fischer). The well-attended conference, featuring 96 early-career researchers, focused on the theme "THINK BIG – Questioning the Role of Competition Law in the 21st Century."
The conference program included presentations from 13 international early-career scholars across six different panels, with the proceedings set to be published in a conference volume in collaboration with NOMOS. The academic program was complemented by a social agenda and two keynote speeches delivered by Dr. Natalie Harsdorf-Borsch (Director General, Federal Competition Authority) and Chris Meyers (General Counsel EU Competition, Amazon).
The conference concluded with an interdisciplinary panel discussion that brought together representatives from various sectors to address the topic "EU Competitiveness in a Globalized World: Competition Law and OR vs Regulation?" The panel featured Chris Meyers (Amazon), RA Dr. Martin Gassler (Wolf Theiss), economist Heike Lehner, Florian Tursky (former Secretary of State for Digitalization and Telecommunications), and Ass.-Prof. Dr. Tabea Bauermeister (University of Regensburg), moderated by Dr. Bernadette Zelger.
The 4th Young Competition Law Scholar Conference is scheduled to take place at the European University Institute in Florence in September 2025. To stay updated, subscribe to the EUI Competition Law Working Group Newsletter.
