Curriculum Vita
Wolfgang Hau was born in 1968 in Dillingen/Saar. He is married to Sandra Faymonville and has three sons. After obtaining the Abitur (1987) and completing military service (1987–1988), he studied law at Saarland University, the University of Wales (Diploma in Legal Studies, Cardiff, 1992) and the University of Trier (Legal State Examinations, 1994 and 1997; doctorate in law (Dr. iur.), 1995). After a brief stint as a lawyer in Trier and Paris, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Trier from 1997 to 2003, where he habilitated in 2002 under the supervision of Professor Dr. Walter F. Lindacher and acquired the teaching qualification (venia legendi) for civil law, procedural law, international private law and comparative law.
From 2003 to 2017, Wolfgang Hau held the Chair of Civil Law, Civil Procedure Law and Private International Law at the University of Passau, where he also served as Dean of the Faculty of Law (2008–2010) and Vice President of the University (2010–2014). He declined calls to the University of Bayreuth (2009) and Saarland University (2011). Since October 2017, Wolfgang Hau has been full professor of the Chair of Civil Law and German, International and Comparative Civil Procedure Law at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich.
From 2016 to 2023, Wolfgang Hau was also a judge at the Higher Regional Court of Munich, dealing with cases of insurance law and cross-border enforcement. Since 2023, he has been the chairman of the Wissenschaftliche Vereinigung für Internationales Verfahrensrecht (German Academic Association for International Procedural Law).
