About the Chair

The Chair specializes in intellectual property law (patents, know-how/trade secrets and copyright) and data law. Current research focuses on patent law, in particular on the European Unitary Patent System (UPC), on standard essential patents (SEPs/FRAND) and patent pools in telecommunication and consumer electronics as well as on specific issues of pharmaceutical patents, indirect patent infringement and other topical issues in German, European and International patent law including licensing (see also MUPatC). Another research focus concerns copyright regulation of the internet as well as legal challenges in the areas of big data, artificial intelligence (AI) and industry 4.0. Furthermore, extensive research projects have covered unfair competition law as well as fundamental questions regarding general principles of intellectual and industrial property rights, such as the treatment of overlap of rights situations. The Chairholder is a member of the Executive Committee of the German Association for Industrial Property and Copyright Law (GRUR), one of three Editors of Germany’s largest Intellectual Property Journal (GRUR journal), a Member of the Editorial Board of GRUR-Patent journal (one of GRUR’s sister journals specifically devoted to patent law) and has authored or edited more than 200 publications in the field including seven books. He has submitted Legal Expert Opinions on German, European and International IP and private law for German and European institutions (such as the European Parliament and other) as well as before German, European, English and U.S courts, arbitration panels and institutions (among them the German Constitutional Court, the German Federal Court of Justice, the Unitary Patent Court, the High Court for England and Wales as well as various U.S. courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC)).
